Volunteers

The Friends of St. Michael's Society of Edmonton is a group of caring volunteers who provide support to St. Michael's Health Group. These individuals assist by:

• fundraising through bingos, casinos and raffles;
• providing financial assistance for equipment and support for recreational. socialization, wellness and leisure activities for the residents of all St. Michael's facilities;
• providing volunteer services to residents, families and visitors

The Friends of St. Michael's Society of Edmonton is a result of the amalgamation of the Rainbow Social and Recreation Club of Edmonton (incorporated in 1988) and the Association of St. Michael's Auxiliary (formed and incorporated under the Societies Act in 1984). Both former organizations were formed when, at that time, the President and CEO of St. Michael's Extended Care Centre Society saw a need for senior programs and services for the residents of his facility. Because there were no resources available at that time, these needs had to be met by volunteers. He approached a group of senior individuals to take this task. These individuals saw first hand what was needed and immediately brought other on board and formed the Association of St. Michael's Auxiliary. A few years later, the need for more financial support was identified and another group of volunteers stepped up to the plate and formed the Rainbow Social and Recreation Club of Edmonton. This group raised funds for various resident needs through Bingo.

As the years passed the two groups found themselves doing many similar activities and the decision to amalgamate was made. The amalgamation group, The Friends of St. Michael's Society of Edmonton now supports recreational, socialization, wellness and leisure activities for the residents of St. Michael's facilities, for outreach community services and assists in funding the purchases of equipment and materials for the facilities of St. Michael's Health Group.

The Friends of St. Michael's Society of Edmonton are thrilled to have Mrs. Marie Stelmach as their Honorary Chair. The Friends of St. michael's Society of Edmonton currently has nearly 80 members. It is noted that almost all Friends member are themselves senior citizens. They give their time and energy to help benefit other, less fortunate seniors.
