About Us
Our History
St. Michael's Extended Care Centre Society was created in 1974 to meet an urgent and growing need for institutional nursing care for individuals of Ukrainian and other Slavic backgrounds in the Edmonton area. It was incorporated in 1976 under the Societies Act of Alberta.
The centre's primary goal was the provision of quality holistic nursing care in a rehabilitative, home-like environment. The emphasis of our services was to offer care for the whole person: mentally, physically, spiritually, and culturally. These components were interwoven throughout the organization determined the way in which care was provided.
With continued changes in the health sector and expectations of the community, St. Michael's developed and administered programs and services to continue to fulfil these needs. A series of partnerships is now in place with other volunteer organizations, developers, community advisory committees, educational institutions, unions, businesses and suppliers. Today, St. Michael's Health Group has positioned itself as a caregiver that offers a variety of programs on and off site, in various geographical settings.
Current ventures include Supportive Living complexes, where the focus has changed from a medical model to a social level of care. Our organization's programs are driven by market forces and the health needs of the community.
The organization is a member in good standing with Capital Health and East Central Health. St. Michael's Health Group is an active member of the Alberta Continuing Care Association (ACCA), Alberta Senior Citizens Housing Association (ASCHA) and the Seniors Housing Association of Alberta.
